Room 205 -
Welcome to the Cannery Suite
The Saanich Canning Company was founded in 1905 by J.J. White and was located approximately where Sidney Waterfront Inn & Suites now sits. The Inn’s design of four linked buildings is reminiscent of the Cannery’s configuration.
Canned clams were a big seller for J.J.’s new canning business and his success resulted in a merger with a neighbouring business, the Sidney Trading Company, operated by C.C. Cochran. Soon the new company was exporting clams world wide. While clams were the focus of the Cannery’s winter production, in summer it canned apples, pears, plus and berries. England and the United States provided large markets for these popular Peninsula products. White and Cochran retired and sold their enterprise in 1939, one year after the canning industry posted record profits.
